Lainey Joy has started clapping with purpose. It is the cutest ever thing. Yesterday we all hung out on our bed for an hour and a good portion of that time was spent clapping with Lainey Joy. She'll clap if we clap and she'll also clap to get us to clap. =P And when she's done clapping, she folds her little hands so cute. I love it! =)
Our garden is growing! Almost everything in the first box is coming up already! Habaneros and tomatoes are still not up. And chives aren't up. I think everything else is. Emily was excited to see all the plants this morning. =)
Last night, Harp and I covered one of the cages and planted half of another box. We planted another square of basil (yeah it's the third and I will probably plant a couple more), cilantro, rosemary, beets, peas, something else, and two of spinach. Yeah it's too late (well and early) for spinach to do well but Harp said it's worth a try for whatever we get. We have plenty of squares left. =) I planted mustard spinach because I am saving my strawberry spinach seeds for the fall when I know they really will grow. =)

Hola
Last night Harper made me a super-yummy dinner. Spinach salad with strawberries and feta and homemade strawberry vinaigrette. A really really really good steak and mushrooms. And wine. Yum! =) And a mint chocolate chip banana split for dessert.
Today Em and I worked on the corner garden, pulling a few weeds and putting the grid up. We were going to plant it too but then Em peed and really wanted a bath, so we came in. It's still uncovered so I hope the cats don't find it. =\
We went to the quilt shop this morning to get ideas to quilt Ashley's quilt. The pattern was in a book I saw there so I was going to see how they quilted the quilts in the pictures but you could only tell in one of them and I didn't like it. I got some funky fabric - 3 coordinating prints with lady bugs and flowers and butterflies. Really bright and fun and they go with the St. Jude's fabrics, too. I have some of those left over.
I started quilting the border on Ashley's quilt. I'm not very good at free-motion quilting but I will have lots of practice on this. If you squint your eyes it looks okay, lol! No it's not really that bad but definitely not perfect.

Garden!
I planted one of my boxes today!! =) Yay!
16 squares: 2 basil, romas, tomatoes, bell peppers, serranos, habaneros, radishes, leeks, cantaloupe, acorn squash, chives, green beans, snow peas, zucchini, and cucumber. Whew!
Two more boxes to go. =) One still doesn't have a cage so I'll need to wait for Harp and a less muddy day to do that.
I was going to put these plastic tile thingies on the boxes for my grid but I would have to drill holes in them first. I tried to nail one in and it split. =( So I opted for string and figured Harp can help me later with the tile things. Or I can just get over it and use string. It actually doesn't look bad and I don't mind it. I used nylon kite string so I think it will even last okay. But I don't want to tell Harp I don't need the tile things, lol. He bought me bamboo things and I didn't like them because they weren't straight. So he bought me these tile things (and I even picked them with him)... All because I didn't want to use string. Oops. =P

Texas FlameCute, huh? I kinda want some that are more tulipy-lookin' too. =) The Don Quixote tulips probably look normal before they get that open. But it will be fun to have funky tulips. My favorite flowers are tulips and daffodils.

Square Foot Gardening
Jaime, I got your comment and sorry it took me so stinkin' long to respond to it. =\
Okay so square foot gardening is basically making a bottomless box above-ground and filling it with 6" of super-good soil. You don't mess with your own soil because it's work and this works better anyway. You only need it deeper than 6" for carrots and stuff that grows down and for that you just make a section (or separate box) that is 12" deep.
You make a grid because it makes it look better, easier, less intimidating, whatever. Easier to know where to plant stuff and you can mess with one square at a time when you plant something new (after you've harvested one thing out of it).
You can plant plants closer together than the packages say. If it says you can plant them 6" apart, then you can plant 4 in a square foot. They are 6 inches apart, but the packages say in rows spaced 3 feet apart. That's the part that's not necessary. If 4" apart, you can plant 9 in the square. If 3" apart, you can plant 16 in the square. Makin' sense?
So you can easily get to all your plants because they are no more than 2 feet away from the outside of the box. You don't have to step in the dirt. You don't have to deal with as many weeds because you're not watering, fertilizing, etc, a whole bunch of dirt where you don't have plants planted.
The plants produce just as much as if you single-row gardened, only you've done it in 1/5 the space, it looks prettier, and it is oodles easier. Like so easy ya just wouldn't believe it.
I have been reading the book I got on interlibrary loan. It's by Mel Bartholomew called All New Square Foot Gardening. And get the new one because he talks about the differences in the book (between this and the old one). The old one is still good, but this one is enough better that I'd just pitch the old one if I owned it.
It tells you how to grow specific things, how & when to clip them and stuff. Ohhhh my goodness I am so excited! I told Harp we may do power bars for dinner and shop for our dirt and stuff. Oh if you want to know the dirt mix... I haven't read the chapter about it yet but it is basically:

- 1/3 vermiculite
- 1/3 blended compost (so get different bags of different kinds) or homemade compost (which he says is better if you have it)

Ooh, Ooh, Ooh! (SFG)
Ashley is doing a square foot garden and she's been telling me about it. So we looked it up on Google and we are soooo excited! Harper is into gardening, if ya didn't know. =) I never really was but now that we have the girls I'm way more excited about it. It will be fun to water and weed with Emmy and pick our veggies. Oooh, yippee!! Now if we could just fast forward a few months... =) No not really, it will all be fun. I can't wait!
